Frugal Living: Clothes

Clothes are definitely one of those things that you can spend hundreds of dollars every month on, or almost nothing. I definitely fall into the latter category, as my students and good friends I’m sure could tell you. I rotate among the same 3 sweaters, 4 pairs of dress pants, 8 or so shirts, and 2 pairs of shoes at work. And for casual wear, it’s much the same, but even less. Maybe 2 pairs of jeans, 3-4 pairs of shorts, 3 t-shirts and a few hoodies. Almost nothing gives me more satisfaction than literally wearing out a piece of clothing, such that it’s so thin, or has so many holes that I absolutely can’t wear it anymore.

Anyway, here are some tips for your frugal wardrobe:

1. Hit the thrift stores. There is plenty of quality stuff for really cheap. I’ve bought many of my work clothes there.

2. Have a one-in, one-out policy. That means that I need to wear an item until it is worn out. When that happens, I can buy another one of that same item, but not before.

3. Rotate. You can get away with an astoundingly little amount of clothes if you rotate pants/shirts/sweaters. Never buy at item that won’t fit with a few other things.

4. Buy basic and quality. If you buy something not at a thrift store, just get the basics: a nice pair of jeans, or a neutral color sweater. Stuff like that never goes out of fashion, and if you buy something that is quality, your cost/wear will be extremely low.

5. If you haven’t worn it in a year, you’re not going to. Give it away.
