Why I Love Cooking at Home

Rice and Beans, Beans and Rice

As Dave Ramsey says, when you’re trying to get out of debt the only time you should see the inside of a restaurant is when you’re working there. And that those who are in debt should be eating rice and beans, beans and rice. Although I’m not in debt, I love cooking at home for the following reasons:

Cooking at Home is Healthy!

I love the fruits and vegetables. A lot. It makes me happy when I eat them and I just physically feel better, more energy and happiness. That leaves me more time to devote to building my passive income streams and working OT in order to have extra money to invest in dividend paying stocks.

Think Long-Term

It’s a long-term investment, financially. Being sick costs money and because I want to eventually live off my passive income, that means I need to be able to live off a small income, especially at first. By eating healthy now, I’m taking a big step towards ensuring that I won’t have a major problem later.

I Don’t Love the Meat

I quite rarely eat meat and it’s not easy to find vegetarian restaurants in South Korea. It’s also not that easy to find ingredients to cook veggie with. People here seem to love the meat BBQ. But, it’s actually no problem, because I order all the vegetarian stuff I need from the most amazing Iherb. Cheap and fast shipping, good sales, a huge variety of stuff. It’s amazing.

It’s Fun

I love learning how to cook new things and challenging myself in the kitchen. And almost nothing makes people happier than a delicious home-cooked meal. A shout-out to my Mom: the queen of the home-cooked meals from scratch. It was from her that I learned the basics.

Top 5 Tips for getting started with Home-Cooking

Learn How

It’s best to learn from a friend or family member who knows what they’re doing. Failing that, check out YouTube. Just search for, “How to make _____.”

Get a Decent Knife and Cutting Board

A nice chef’s knife will last you a lifetime and it will make your cooking experience so much better. But you need to learn how to use it! Watch some YouTube videos to learn how. You don’t need the whole set-just one chef’s knife will do. Something like this $55 Henkel on Amazon is an excellent choice.

Cook from Scratch!

Forget all that stuff from boxes and cans-it’s way healthier, cheaper and more delicious to cook from scratch. If you’re looking to do this vegetarian style, by far my favorite cookbook is from Moosewood.

Potluck!

Instead of going out with your friends or family members, suggest a potluck at your place. It’s cheaper than eating out and you can play some board games or watch a movie instead of going for drinks.

Plant a Garden

There is nothing more satisfying than cooking and eating something that you grew yourself. For real. I’m so looking forward to the day when I don’t live in an apartment complex and I can get my gardening on.
